Secondary World Book Day

On Thursday 1st March students across primary and secondary celebrated World Book Day to raise money for the World Literacy Foundation. Students and staff were invited to dress as their favourite characters from books and were invited to take part in a range of activities. These activities included The White Rabbit’s Big Breakfast read, The Tweedle Twins’ fancy dress parade and photo booth, the Mad Hatter’s VIP Tea Party and the Queen of Hearts’ Bake sale.

Along with this we also had a visit from the author Joshua Raven, writer of the Five Fingers series, who worked with Year 10 students, Year 12 students and students in Years 5 and 6 to help them with their creative writing and journalistic skills.

Primary World Book Day

On Thursday 1st March 2018, QIS celebrated World Book day. What a celebration it was! QIS pupils and teachers pulled out all the stops on this special day where we celebrated authors, illustrator and more importantly books and stories. There was a fantastic effort from everyone on their costumes.

In Primary, we hosted a Big Read inviting pupils and parents to take part in sharing their favourite story books with their peers and teachers from 6:30-7:00am. It was lovely to see so many pupils book swapping and discussing their best authors.

Across the school, the pupils were engaged in a variety of Literacy activities all throughout the day. From making bookmarks in Early Years to designing front cover of books in KS1 and drama based activities in KS2, the pupils had a great time exploring literary avenues. Pupils went on a hunt around Primary to find Wally and had the opportunity to use the photo booth in our Secondary school grounds to take fun pictures. Some very lucky classes also received book prizes for best costumes and poetry recitals.

Year 6 paired up with secondary pupils to create dioramas on the theme of alternative worlds and portal text. This involved designing, creating and constructing a 3D model of their chosen stories. We used the outdoor space in our basketball area to spread out and it was a lovely morning for all.

World Book day wouldn’t be complete without an author visit so we decided to invite Mohana Rajakumar, a local author in Doha to read with our pupils. Nursery, Early Years and KS1 spent time with the author who read her books. The pupils asked great questions, even the author was impressed!

KS2 also had an author visit. Joshua Raven provided a workshop style session to pupils in KS2 on creative writing. Writing a six-word story was an interesting challenge.

All in all, it was a fabulous day with a really exciting atmosphere around school. We can’t wait for WBD again!
