English is a compulsory subject throughout the school
until the end of Year 11. It is also offered in Year 12
as an AS Level option.
We in the English department believe that learning should
be an enjoyable process. There is therefore an emphasis
on creativity in all courses. All students are respected
and encouraged to develop their thinking processes and
to improve their communication skills. We place high importance
on the teaching of literacy skills at all levels.
Whilst the demands of each course are specific, we believe
there are fundamental skills that all students need, though
there may be differentiated approaches to their acquisition.
It is our intention not only to provide students with
the necessary tools to succeed at IGCSE level and beyond,
but to expose them to a wide range of texts, regardless
of their set. These include: newspapers and magazines,
websites, novels and short stories, poems, plays, adverts
and leaflets.
Students receive weekly library / research lessons in
order to foster an ability for independent work.
The aim of the English department is to support and scaffold
students' learning experience in school and to prepare
them for their studies and careers beyond Year 12.
