In QIS, French is taught from Year 3 to Year 12. At the end of Year 11, pupils are entered for the University of Cambridge IGCSE examinations in Foreign Language French and in Years 12 and 13, we present pupils for the Edexcel AS/A2 level examinations.

Our aim at Key Stage 3 is to stimulate an awareness of language, teaching the pupils how to learn a language, allowing them clearer communication and also broadening their horizons. The element of enjoyment is also very important and we organize several fun events during the year.

For pupils joining the school at this stage with little or no previous knowledge, we provide extra classes in Activity time and extra help in class, to allow them to “catch-up” to whatever degree possible, depending on their ability and willingness to work hard.

Years 7, 8 and 9 are set into two or three single-sex classes. Setting allows for differentiation of teaching methods and extension work with the higher sets.

In Key Stage 4, the aims are

    • to develop in the pupils the ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication
    • to consolidate a base of language skills, vocabulary and attitudes required for further study, work or leisure
    • to provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation
    • to encourage a positive attitude towards foreign language learning and a sympathetic attitude towards other cultures and civilizations

Last but not least, we aim to provide our pupils with the skills necessary to obtain the highest results possible for themselves in the University of Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel AS/A levels.

Every year we have some native speakers for whom we develop an individual course of study according to their strengths and weaknesses. Some will go on to study for the University of Cambridge IGCSE in First Language French.
