Physical Education is one of the key learning areas in the curriculum at Qatar International School. The school has a wide variety of facilities available for the students to use during their Physical Education sessions. These include:
- large multipurpose hall
- outdoor basketball court
- tennis court
- volleyball court
- swimming pool
- grassed football pitch
The various areas covered during Physical Education sessions throughout the year are:
- Gymnastics
- Invasion games
- Striking and net/wall games
- Athletics
- Dance
- Swimming (for Years 3 - 6)
Note: For swimming the boys and girls are separated for this activity and are taught by a qualified instructor.
Please refer below for a more detailed description, as per the British National Curriculum Standards, of the above activities covered in the Physical Education curriculum.
Gymnastics
In this unit children investigate movement, stillness, and how to find and use space safely. They explore basic gymnastic actions on the floor and using apparatus. They copy or create, remember and repeat, short movement phrases of 'like' linked actions, e.g. two jumps, or two rolls.
In gymnastics as a whole, children use skills and agilities individually, in combination and in sequence, with the aim of showing as much control and precision as possible.
Invasion Games
In all games activities, children think about how to use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition. In invasion games, they enter their opponent's territory with the 'ball' and try to get into good positions for shooting or reaching the 'goal'.
Striking and Net/Wall Games
In all games activities, children have to think about how they use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition. In striking, fielding and net/wall games, players achieve this by striking or sending a ball (or other implement) towards a target trying to deceive or avoid defenders, so that they can run between wickets or around bases to score runs. When fielding, they try to prevent runs or points being scored.
Athletics
In this unit children concentrate on developing good basic running, jumping and throwing techniques. They are set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing.
As in all athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy.
Dance
In dance as a whole, children think about how to use movement to explore and communicate ideas and issues, and their own feelings and thoughts. As they work, they develop an awareness of the historical and cultural origins of different dances.
Swimming
In all swimming activities, children have to keep afloat and propel themselves through water. Learning to swim enables them to take part in a range of water-based activities.
The above activities are taught from Years 1 to 6 by the classroom teachers (except swimming, where a qualified instructor is present). All students are requested to wear the correct P.E. uniform. The shirts required are available from the school office. Students should also wear navy shorts or tracksuit pants for their P.E. lessons.
Interschool Competitions
In addition to the physical activities the students participate in during school hours, there are also various interschool sports competitions. Qatar International School is a member of the Qatar Private Primary Schools Sports Association, which holds many events throughout the school year. The sports that students can represent Qatar International School in are as follows:
- Indoor Athletics
- Basketball
- Cross Country
- Rounders
- utdoor Athletics
- Football
- Netball
- Swimming
The competitions that are held involve students from Years 3 - 6. Students are given a special sports uniform (shorts, shirt and cap) for recognition of their participation in the interschool competition.
