Qatar is an independent emirate, with full independence
from the former British protectorate announced on 3rd September
1971.
His Highness the Emir is head of the constitutional authorities,
and appoints both the prime minister and the ministers.
Power is transferred from father to son within the Al Thani
family.
Constitutional development has kept pace with the recent
rapid economic development of the country. The first free
elections were held to the Cenral Municipal Council in 1999
and the first parliamentary elections are expected in 2007.
The country is an active participant in world affairs,
and is a member of the United Nations, World Trade Organisation,
International Monetary Fund, World Interlectual Property
Organisation and the Gulf Cooperation Council (amongst others).
